Never Ignore the Way Someone Treats Their Children - It Says More About Their Character Than You Think

When we enter a relationship, it's easy to get caught up in chemistry, attraction and all the exciting things that come with getting to know someone. We notice how they treat us, how they make us feel and the promises they make about the future. But there's one thing that often gets overlooked, and in my opinion, it can tell you more about a person's character than almost anything else.

How do they treat their children?

Today I shared a post on my Facebook page that read:
"Never date a man who has abandoned his kids, or doesn't support them. Any man who isn't loyal to his children will never be loyal to anyone."

It sparked plenty of discussion, and that's exactly what I hoped it would do.

Some people may agree wholeheartedly, while others might think it's too harsh. But this isn't about judging someone because their relationship with the other parent didn't work out. Relationships end every day. Marriages fail. People grow apart.

Parenthood, however, doesn't end when the relationship does.

Being a Parent Is a Lifetime Commitment
When a child is born, they don't ask to be brought into the world. They don't choose their parents or the circumstances they're born into. They rely on the adults in their lives to protect them, love them and provide for them.
That's why I believe that becoming a parent is one of the greatest responsibilities anyone can have.
Supporting your children isn't simply about paying maintenance every month. Financial support is important, but children need so much more than money.

They need a parent who shows up.

They need someone who attends school events, celebrates birthdays, helps with homework, comforts them when they're hurting and cheers them on when they achieve something special. They need to know that they're loved, wanted and important.

Children remember who was there.
They also remember who wasn't.
Character Is Revealed Through Actions
One of the biggest mistakes people make in relationships is believing words over actions.
It's easy for someone to tell you they're kind, loyal and trustworthy.
It's much harder to fake those qualities over time.

If someone has chosen to walk away from the responsibility of raising their own children without making any effort to remain involved in their lives, that decision speaks volumes about their priorities.

It raises important questions.

If they can ignore the people who need them most, what happens when your relationship faces challenges?
If they avoid responsibility once, what's stopping them from doing it again?
Love Should Never Come at the Expense of a Child
One thing I struggle to understand is how someone can knowingly date a person who neglects their children and simply accept it.

How do you watch someone ignore phone calls from their child?
How do you celebrate holidays together while knowing those children have been forgotten?
How do you encourage someone to spend all their money on you while they refuse to provide for their own children?

Personally, I couldn't.

Children should never have to compete for love, attention or financial support because a parent has started a new relationship. A healthy relationship encourages people to become better-not worse. If I Date Someone With Children...
I've always believed that when you choose to love someone, you also accept the important parts of their life. If I were in a relationship with a man who has children, those children would matter to me too. That doesn't mean replacing their mother. It doesn't mean interfering in parenting decisions. It simply means treating them with kindness, respect and compassion.

Children deserve to feel welcomed, not like they're an inconvenience.
I would encourage any partner to spend time with their children, attend important milestones and remain actively involved in their lives. A loving partner should never expect someone to choose between them and their children. That should never even be a question. Respecting the Children's Mother Matters Too.
This is another point many people overlook. Whether the relationship ended on good terms or not, the children's mother will always be part of their lives.

Respect doesn't mean becoming best friends. It means understanding that healthy communication and co-parenting create a better environment for the children.
Far too many children grow up caught in the middle of adult arguments. They become messengers. They hear negative comments about one parent from the other.
They carry emotional burdens they should never have to carry. Children deserve better.
When adults choose maturity over conflict, everyone benefits.

"This is one of the reasons why co-parenting never worked for me-the constant disrespect from my child's father and whoever his partner may be."

We Need to Stop Normalising Absent Parenting. Society often celebrates parents for doing the bare minimum. Someone posts one photo with their child after months of absence, and suddenly everyone praises them as an amazing parent.Parenting isn't a social media moment. It's consistency. It's sacrifice. It's showing up every single day-even when it's inconvenient.

Children don't need perfect parents. They need present parents. The little things matter.
Reading bedtime stories. Helping with homework. Listening after a difficult day at school.
Teaching values. Creating memories. These moments shape a child's future far more than expensive gifts ever could.

Before You Commit, Pay Attention. When you're getting to know someone, don't only pay attention to how they treat you. Watch how they treat the people who can do nothing for them. Pay attention to how they speak about their children. Do they make excuses?
Do they blame everyone else? (especially their ex partner). Do they take responsibility for their mistakes? (Accountability matters)
Or do they actively work to maintain a healthy relationship with their children despite life's challenges?

These answers tell you far more about someone's character than expensive dates or romantic gestures ever will.

Life Isn't Always Black and White. It's also important to acknowledge that life can be complicated. We shouldn't judge without understanding someone's full story. But we also shouldn't ignore obvious patterns of neglect. Children Deserve Better
At the end of the day, children are the innocent ones. They don't ask for broken relationships. They don't ask for divorce.
They don't ask for conflict. All they want is to know they're loved. Every child deserves parents who put their wellbeing ahead of pride, bitterness or convenience.

Imagine how different our communities would be if more parents took that responsibility seriously.

Imagine the confidence children would have knowing they were deeply loved and consistently supported.

Imagine the emotional wounds that could be prevented.

Children don't need luxury. They need love. They need stability. They need parents who choose them every single day.

My Final Thoughts
For me, children will always come first. No relationship should ever require someone to neglect their responsibilities as a parent. If anything, love should inspire us to become better people.

A good partner encourages responsibility. A good partner celebrates involved parenting.
A good partner understands that children should never be made to feel like they're second best.

Before you build a future with someone, ask yourself one simple question:
How do they treat the people who depend on them the most?
The answer may tell you everything you need to know.

At the end of the day, character isn't measured by beautiful words or impressive social media posts. It's measured by consistency, responsibility and the choices we make when nobody is watching.

Because children don't just remember what we say.

They remember whether we were there.

What do you think?
Do you believe the way someone treats their children reflects the kind of partner they will be?
Or do you think every situation is different? I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences in the comments below. Let's keep the conversation respectful and remember that every child deserves love, support and a parent who shows up.
